Raw A2 Milk: Why All the Fuss?

At Meadowvale Farmstead & Creamery, we've taken a traditional approach to dairy, focusing on raw A2/A2 milk from our heritage Normande Cattle. There's a growing interest in raw milk, and when you add the A2 component into the mix, it's worth taking a closer look. Here's a friendly dive into why raw A2 milk might just find its way into your heart and fridge.

What is Raw A2 Milk?

First off, let's define our terms:

  • Raw Milk: This is milk that hasn't been pasteurized, meaning it hasn't gone through the heating process that kills off bacteria. It's milk in its most natural state, straight from the cow, with all of its natural digestive components, enzymes, probiotics, and prebiotics intact.
  • A2 Milk: Unlike conventional milk, which often contains both A1 and A2 beta-casein proteins, A2 milk is from cows that produce only the A2 type. This genetic trait is more common in certain heritage breeds like our Normandes.

The Unique Qualities of Raw Milk

  • Rich in Natural Enzymes: Raw milk retains all its naturally occurring enzymes that can be destroyed by pasteurization. These enzymes contribute to the milk's digestibility, flavor, and nutritional profile.
  • Full Spectrum of Nutrients: Without heat treatment, raw milk maintains a balance of vitamins, minerals, and probiotics. This includes vitamins A and D, which are more bioavailable in their natural forms.
  • Flavor and Texture: Many people find raw milk has a richer, creamier taste and a fresh, natural feel that pasteurized milk can't replicate.

The A2 Factor

    • Digestive Comfort: For some individuals, A2 milk might be kinder to the digestive system. While we must be cautious not to overstate these benefits without more research, anecdotal evidence suggests fewer digestive issues like bloating, gas, or discomfort after consuming A2 milk compared to A1 milk.
    • Protein Composition: The key difference between A1 and A2 milk lies in the type of beta-casein protein. A2 beta-casein is identical to the protein found in human milk, as well as goat and sheep milk.
    • Nutritional Integrity: Unaltered by the pasteurization process, raw A2 milk maintains a higher level of naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, and beneficial bacteria. This could mean richer sources of vitamins A, D, and K2, along with calcium and phosphorus in forms that are potentially more bioavailable.
    • Support for Local and Sustainable Farming: Choosing A2 milk often means supporting farms like ours that focus on heritage breeds, which are less intensive in terms of feed and have a natural resistance to many common dairy cow ailments. This supports biodiversity and sustainable agricultural practices.
    • Cultural and Historical Connection: Drinking A2 milk reconnects us with the dairy practices of our ancestors. Before the industrialization of dairy farming, most milk consumed would have been from A2-producing cows, aligning with a time when food was less processed and closer to its natural state.

Our Approach to Raw A2 Dairy

  • Regenerative Farming: Our Normande Cattle graze on lush, diverse pastures, contributing to soil health and biodiversity. This not only benefits the land but also the quality of the milk they produce. Grassfed raw milk typically contains higher levels of beneficial fats like omega-3s and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which are linked to various health benefits including heart health. Additionally, grass-fed milk is much richer in fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K2.
  • Transparency and Quality: We're committed to transparency. Our cows are raised without hormones, GMO feeds, antibiotics, and other conventional short-cuts which boost production at the expense of safety and health.

A Note of Caution
While we're enthusiasts of raw A2 milk, it's important to approach raw dairy with a bit of care:

  • Handling: Raw milk requires proper handling and storage to maintain its safety. Always keep your raw dairy at temperatures below 36F, and ensure that you're sourcing your products from healthy animals and a dairy that uses best practices for hygiene.
  • Individual Health: While many enjoy raw milk without issue, it's not suitable for everyone, especially those with compromised immune systems, pregnant women, or young children. Always consult with your healthcare provider regarding dietary choices.
