At Meadowvale Farmstead & Creamery, we pride ourselves on our commitment to heritage breeds, which are not only a link to our agricultural past, but also key players in our vision for a sustainable future. These animals are selected for their unique qualities that align with our regenerative farming practices, promoting biodiversity, genetic strength, and exceptional quality in food production.

Normande Cattle
Our Normande Cattle are a treasure from Normandy, France, where they've been appreciated for centuries. Recognized by their beautiful tri-color patterns - shades of brown, black, and white - these cows are more than just aesthetically pleasing.

  • Adaptability: Normandes are known for their ability to thrive in varied climates, making them perfect for the diverse Montana weather.
  • Milk Quality: They produce milk with a high butterfat content, ideal for cheese-making. Our raw milk from Normandes is rich, creamy, and packed with A2 proteins, which are easier to digest for many people.
  • Dual Purpose: Not only are they excellent dairy cows, but they also provide high-quality, well-marbled beef. This dual-purpose nature is a cornerstone of sustainable farming, reducing the need for multiple specialized breeds.

Mangalitsa Pigs
Mangalitsa pigs, often called the 'Wooly Pigs' due to their thick, curly hair, hail from Hungary. These pigs are a throwback to a time when lard was king:

  • Unique Fat Composition: Their fat is high in monounsaturated fats, akin to olive oil, offering health benefits not typically found in modern pork. This makes Mangalitsa pork incredibly flavorful and sought-after in gourmet circles.
  • Cold Weather Hardy: Their woolly coat allows them to thrive in colder climates, fitting perfectly into our Montana winters.
  • Slow Growth: Mangalitsas take longer to mature, which contributes to the superior quality of their meat. They live a life of foraging and grazing, which not only enriches their diet but also benefits our land.

KuneKune Pigs
KuneKune pigs bring a piece of New Zealand to our farm, known for their friendly disposition and unique physical traits:

  • Gentle Giants: These pigs are noted for their docile nature, making them excellent for small farms or educational settings where interaction with animals is encouraged.
  • Foraging Experts: With shorter snouts, they tend to root less, focusing more on grazing, which is perfect for maintaining pasture health.
  • Meat Quality: KuneKune pork is known for its sweet, tender quality with excellent marbling, offering a unique taste experience that's becoming increasingly popular.

French Alpine Goats
Our French Alpine Goats add a touch of French elegance to our farmstead:

  • High Milk Yield: These goats are renowned for their ability to produce significant amounts of milk, which we turn into a variety of fresh cheeses.
  • Efficient Feed Converters: They can convert a wide variety of vegetation into milk, making them adaptable to different forage conditions and beneficial for land management.
  • Hardy and Agile: Their sturdy build and agility mean they can navigate our rugged terrain, contributing to grazing diversity and soil health.

Anatolian Shepherd Dogs
The guardians of our farm, Anatolian Shepherd Dogs, are an ancient breed from Turkey designed for livestock protection:

  • Natural Guardians: Their instinct to protect livestock from predators like wolves and bears is unmatched, making them invaluable for our free-range system.
  • Low Maintenance: These dogs require minimal training for their protective duties, as it's bred into their DNA to watch over and defend their charges.
  • Adaptable and Loyal: Anatolians are known for their loyalty and adaptability, fitting seamlessly into the life of a working farm while forming strong bonds with our animals and staff.

At Meadowvale Farmstead & Creamery, each of these heritage breeds plays a pivotal role in our ecosystem. By choosing to work with these animals, we're not only preserving genetic diversity but also promoting a model of agriculture that gives back to the land. We invite you to experience the fruits of this labor through our farm-fresh products, or better yet, come visit and see these heritage breeds in action, contributing to a cycle of health, sustainability, and taste that's truly unique to our farm.

Join us in this journey, where every product tells a story of respect, tradition, and innovation. Whether it's the rich milk of our Normandes, the gourmet pork from our Mangalitsas, the sweet meat of KuneKune, the versatile cheese from our French Alpines, or the peace of mind knowing our livestock is well-guarded by our Anatolian Shepherds, you're partaking in something special. Let’s grow together towards a more sustainable, flavorful future.
